The first thing you will need to clean a split air conditioner is an air conditioner wash bag. These bags are specifically designed to catch the dirty water that comes out of your air conditioner as you clean it. Therefore, this is one of the most important parts of your cleaning kit.
Another vital piece of equipment you will need to clean your air conditioning system is a coil cleaner. When selecting your coil cleaner, it is important to look at the different types available. Some coil cleaners come in the shape of a foam. Naturally, this can make the cleaning incredibly messy. So, if you have the choice, always go for a liquid coil cleaner.
Please note that there are certain coil cleaners that are not suitable for newer air conditioning systems; this because they contain incredibly harsh chemicals. The chemicals can attack the hydrophilic barrier on the coils, so stay away from harsh chemicals when it comes to coil cleaners.
The Cleaning Process
To start the cleaning process, you must first position the wash bag around your air conditioner; this to catch any of the dirty water that comes out during the cleaning process. Simply attach the bag around the bottom of the air conditioner and make sure it is secured properly, since you do not want this bag falling off while you are cleaning.
Once the wash bag is in place, add some of the coil cleaner on the coils. For maximum effect, you should always apply the coil spray at an angle; this ensures it will get on the surface as well as into the coils.
In addition to putting the cleaning solution onto the coils, you should also spray some on the rotary blades of your split air conditioner. Since these can be quite difficult to reach, you may need an extension piece on the spray bottle for maximum effect.
Once you have applied the coil cleaner, you must wait for the product to work. Please note that the time can vary from product to product. While for most products the waiting time lies between ten and twenty minutes, it is always recommended to check the exact duration.
When you have given the product enough time to work, use a water sprayer to remove all the dirt from the air conditioner. While you do this, the dirty water will collect in the wash bag underneath the air conditioner unit. Once done, remove the bag from the air conditioner.
Finally, do not forget to wash off the exterior of the air conditioning unit. Simply use a mild detergent and a damp cloth to remove any stains and dirt.
