The Actual Fort
Even though Fort Worth looks far from a fort today, Fort Worth was actually a big fort at one point. A long time ago, the United States required some cavalrymen on the western front. The cavalrymen had a clear role, to keep the peace between American Indian tribes and settlers in Arlington, Haltom City, and Keller.
The fort had a massive impact on the local residents. Not only did more population find their way to Fort Worth, so did commerce. Countless shops set up their business in the area, and in 1856, Fort Worth finally obtained a country seat. Now, the country seat was won with some interesting tactics, as voters were plied with whiskey. In addition to that, there is believed to have been some voter fraud. While the beginnings are a little Merkey, it made Fort Worth into the amazing place it is today.
Spice And Ice Cream Drumsticks
This area of Texas made some valuable contributions to the world of food over the years. One of the first contributions to the culinary world is a spice called Chiltomaline. This may not mean much to you as this was the original name of the spice sold in 1890. Now, this spice is known under the name Pendery’s.
38 years later, Fort Worth made a contribution to ice cream too, as Pangburn Ice Cream & Cando Co. accidentally created the ice cream “drumstick”, an ice cream cone with chocolate and nuts. This cone is still sold today, as it is currently a Nestle product!
The Panther Legend
Since the 1870s, rumors about a Panther roaming the streets started to surface. The first report of the “Panther” dates back to the 1870s, even though nobody actually saw the animal. Funnily enough, the Panther is permanently connected with the area, ranging from Panther Island to the Fort Worth Baseball Panthers.
Kelly Clarkson
That’s right, world-famous singer Kelly Clarkson was actually born here and attended South Mi Mount Elementary School. there are more famous residents as well, including John Denver, Leon Bridges, Kirk Franklin, Betty Buckley, and Townes Van Zandt.
A Hiding Place For Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid
In the early 1900s, Fort Worth was a brilliant hiding place for some of the world’s most notorious outlaws. Interestingly, Fort Worth was the only place most outlaws would respect in those days!
Two famous outlaws who sought refuge in the Fort, and are none other than Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. According to local legend, they lived at a hotel on Main Street. They even had the time to sit for the Wild Bunch portrait.
